Unless your guests are visiting by trekking through the forest to reach your backyard, the first thing they notice is your front yard. People notice what you have in your front yard and they also notice what’s missing from your front yard.
Doing landscape design is a lot like creating a new food recipe, you add new and different ingredients trying to make the dish stand out. Try and design your front yard using the same philosphy. Remember it’s not really about having your home look like everyones elses does.
First think about types of curbing you might add to your design. Maybe granite will add a distictive frame to your front yard or a well crafted stone wall could become the binder for the remaining accents your decide to use.
Second, consider bushes and tress that bloom at different times in the season. Do you want something in your yard that you put holiday lights on every year? If you do make sure you add it to your landscaping design.
Third, the walkway can pose a problem. Do you want a traditional walkway that leads from the road or from the driveway? Nowadays most people seem to enter homes through either the garage or a side porch leaving the front door unused. Maybe sweeping the walkway from your driveway to the front door will encourage people to use that entrance. Who knows you might start a new trend.
However you envision your front yard take the time to map it out on paper mixing things up to create a front yard that is uniquely you.
